What is S.M.S.?

S.M.S. stands for Strength, Mobility and Stability.  All three of these factors are critical in rehabilitating the low back and getting rid of pain.  Leaving out one of these things can leave the back susceptible to injury.  The S.M.S system was devised to help a person not only alleviate back pain entirely, but also be able to get back to daily activities and even sports.

When you have a low back injury or pain, it is so debilitating.  You start to feel like you are broken... even the slightest movement can cause varying degrees of pain.  It can literally take over your life.  At that point, you may be willing to do anything to get out of pain, including drugs or surgery.  And you should consult your doctor to make sure you are a good candidate for rehab.  If you are, then S.M.S. may be extremely helpful for you.

So, what caused the injury or pain in the first place?  At S.M.S., we believe it is due to a variety of postural distortions caused by muscle imbalances in the body.  These muscle imbalances are usually created over years and years of misuse of the body and general disuse.  We all sit too much and do not exercise and stretch enough.  That is just a fact of our modern life.  As a result, many of our muscles start to tighten up over time.  And other muscles get weak.  This causes the body to shift out of alignment.  And that shift can put a lot of stress and pressure on the low back, especially the discs and nerves.  And that can translate into low back pain.

When you have low back pain, you should take a look in the mirror and see if your posture is healthy or not.  But, sometimes, you may not be able to tell.  The idea of S.M.S. is to help you identify the postural distortion and then give you a whole series of gentle, but powerful stretches and exercises to get you back into correct alignment naturally.  As you address the tightness and weakness, you should start to feel some relief pretty quickly.  As time goes on, you should start to feel better and better until you get to the point that you are no longer in pain.  But, it will take a little time.  This is not some magical shortcut.  S.M.S is based on the science of the body and it is very effective.
